_____________________________________________Private Forest Stewardship

There are many resources available to the private forest landowner in Minnesota. The South St. Louis SWCD provides forestry assistance in our area.

We work with the Minnesota Department of Natural Resources Division of Forestry to provide Forest Stewardship plans to landowners. We have received several grants from DNR to provide plans in specific watersheds.

We employ a professional forester that is qualified to prepare stewardship plans. The Forest Stewardship plans are provided at no cost, and with no obligation. Sometimes there are cost-share funds available to help implement the activities outlined in the plan.

The program is available to owners of 20 acres or more in South St. Louis SWCD. The forester inventories the land, talks with you to learn your goals, and prepares a detailed Forest Stewardship plan that meets your needs and goals.

Individual goals can include: tree planting, timber stand improvement, timber harvesting, improving wildlife habitat, or creating a low-impact hiking trail.

We also distribute information to provide forestry technical and educational assistance. The Minnesota Forest Resources Council developed Sustaining Minnesota Forest Resources: Voluntary Site-Level Forest Management Guidelines for Landowners, Loggers and Natural Resources Managers.  At the end of 2001 we mailed thousands of brochures to area property owners promoting these guidelines.

These guidelines present recommendations on protecting:
• Wildlife habitat
• Historic/Cultural resources

• Riparian areas
• Soil productivity

• Water quality
• Wetlands
• Visual quality

There are also specific guidelines on forest road building, timber harvesting, mechanical site preparation, pesticide use, reforestation, timber stand improvement, fire management, and forest recreation management.
