Hazelnut can be found throughout Minnesota. Usually growing as a 6—8 foot tall, multi-stemmed shrub, it can be pruned to form a small tree reaching a height of 10—16 feet. It is best grown in natural areas, as windbreaks and wildlife shelterbelts, screenings and the back of a shrub border. Grows in most soil conditions in full sun or part shade. Fall colors range from orange, rose, purplish red to yellow-green. Hazelnuts provide excellent food for many kinds of wildlife. Filberts (the nut) are edible, although wildlife will probably beat you to them.
