Balsam fir is a coniferous boreal tree species that grows slowly but can be very tolerant to shade. Balsam fir typically grows well on cool, moist, acidic sites. They can grow 40 to 70 feet tall and 15 to 25 feet wide. Balsam fir has low drought tolerance and can also face defoliation events from the native spruce budworm so planting in lower densities is recommended.
