Sugar Maple has a slow to moderate growth rate obtaining a height of 60 to 80 feet with a width of 30 to 60 feet. It prefers moist well-drained loams and clay loams. It is very shade tolerant but sensitive to drought, pollution, and salt. Bright green leaves develop outstanding fall color ranging from yellow to orange to red. Flowers appear in early spring with winged seeds that are released in fall. Lifespan ranges from over 300 years in a forest setting to around 100 years in a stressed urban environment. Uses include wildlife plantings, ornamental and street plantings, wood products, and maple syrup. Do not plant near power lines.
