Ninebark is an adaptable shrub, with a round shape, maturing to 4—8 feet in height by the same width. Its growth rate is moderate and will grow in full sun or light shade, in dry sandy soils as well as heavy clay. Young stems are bright red and smooth, while old bark peels off in thin strips to expose a brown inner bark. Flowers are white or pinkish in terminal clusters. Fruit is small and red, and leaves turn yellow in the fall. The flowers are attractive to butterflies, insects, and birds.
